The ego ideal is a very important concept in thinking through the relation among self, the exercise of power, and democratic practices. A narcissistically regressed ego ideal can motivate or activate unconscious phantasies leading to tyrannical uses of power and contempt for or denial of consensual reality. By contrast, an ego ideal tempered through transitional spaces and the kind of psychological growth that accompanies integration into larger and more inclusive social relations may have generative effects not only on the self but on the political life of the culture
